What should I remember after obtaining refugee status in Russia?

Once you get refugee status in Russia, you should remember a few things to be welcome in the country. Read the article to learn more about them.

WHAT TO DO AFTER OBTAINING A REFUGEE CERTIFICATE

After you get a Certificate, you should not forget to do the following:

→ Every year, no later than a month before the certificate expires, apply for its extension;
→ Re-register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs at least once every year and a half;
→ If the information about you changed (for example, surname, family composition, etc.) report this to the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 7 days;
→ If you are leaving Russia, deregister in advance and, within 7 days from the date of arrival in Russia, register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs at your new place of stay.

HOW TO EXTEND THE REFUGEE CERTIFICATE

A refugee certificate is issued for 3 years and can be extended an unlimited number of times in the future. Each time the certificate is renewed for only 1 year. To do this, a foreigner must contact the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he/she is registered as a refugee, with an application for extension. There is no special form for the application; you only need to indicate the circumstances that prevent you from returning to your homeland. This application must be submitted no later than one month before the expiration date of the certificate.

REVOCATION

Obtaining refugee status is difficult, but losing it is quite easy.

In what cases may a Refugee Certificate be not issued, not extended, or even be revoked?

→ A foreign national has acquired Russian citizenship;
→ He/she has benefited from the protection of his/her home state;
→ He/she has acquired citizenship of another country, the protection of which he/she can benefit from;
→ There are no more grounds to recognize him/her as a refugee;
→ He/she has committed a criminal offense in Russia;
→ When applying, he/she provided deliberately false information or presented false documents that served as the basis to recognize him/her as a refugee
→ He/she was held administratively liable for committing an administrative drug trafficking offense.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE LOST OR DAMAGED YOUR REFUGEE CERTIFICATE

If the holder has lost or damaged his/her refugee certificate, he/she must immediately apply to the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the place of registration to reissue the document. In the application, indicate the loss or damage to the certificate as the reason.
