Note that some countries with which Russia has a special agreement do not require any document legalization at all, not even an apostille. These include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

An apostille is a certificate issued under the 1961 Hague Convention that is affixed to a document executed in a foreign state. The apostille certifies the authenticity of the document and allows it to be recognized as an official document in other states that are parties to the Convention. This is a simpler authentication of documents compared to the "classic" legalization.

For example, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Cuba, Syria, Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and all other non-contracting states.

What is the consular legalization?

Consular legalization (also often called "authentication" in the English-speaking tradition) is the second type of legalization for official documents issued to another state. It differs from the apostille in that consular legalization is performed by states that have not signed the Hague Apostille Convention.

To use a document written in a foreign language in Russia, it must be translated into the official language - Russian.

In addition, such a translation must be notarized; that is, the notary certifies that the translation was performed by a certified translator.

This ensures the legality of the translation - it can be provided to the court, the police or any other government agency.

AI or machine translation can always be used.

However, neither can provide a completely accurate and stylistically correct translation, take into account all the nuances of the context, and respect the traditions of the source and target languages. In the event of a court hearing, an investigation by the police, or a tax authority investigation, it is often crucial to present accurate information.

Furthermore, evidence submitted to Russian authorities must be notarized, and this is only possible if it bears the signature of a certified translator.
